Introduction

Conjurer is an immersive virtual reality viewer for VRML 1 & 2 files. It is designed to be scalable across a wide range of display systems. Conjurer supports VRML features that are often excluded by translators & other viewer applications.

Features
1. Native VRML Support

VRML files can be exported from many CAD/CAE & design packages. Conjurer has native support for VRML and VRML97 files through the Coin library. Below are some examples of what that means.

QUEST simulation in Conjurer Delmia QUEST can export discrete event simulations as VRML files. Conjurer can process those scripted simulations and give users a full-scale walkthrough of a working factory.
Dynamic Designer simulation in Conjurer Dynamic Designer exports VRML files containing animations of mechanical assemblies. Conjurer can render them with ease, even across a cluster.
2. Immersive Display System Support

Conjurer is highly configurable & scalable because it is based on VR Juggler, an open-source virtual reality suite. It is designed to perform very well on both commodity clusters and high-end visualization machines. Supported display systems range from single-wall stereoscopic displays to tiled displays and CAVE™-like systems. VR Juggler supports a large number of input & tracking devices through a combination of included drivers and support for Trackd and VRPN.

3. Navigation & Interaction
Navigation Modes
Conjurer navigation is designed to be intuitive and user-friendly using a 6-DOF wand.
Fly Icon Fly: Point the wand in a direction and fly there. Use the joystick on the wand to control speed and to turn. Drive Icon Drive: Same as flying but without the ability to go up & down. CAD Icon CAD: Use the wand like a 3-button mouse to rotate, translate, and scale the model.
Scene Interaction
Many VRML worlds have actions & animations that are triggered by a mouse click. Conjurer simulates pointing & clicking the mouse with a 3-D pointer and a button press on a wand. Conjurer also supports selection & highlighting of nodes in the scene using the pointer.
Menu Interaction

Conjurer has a minimalist 3-D menu that can easily be toggled on & off.

The menu controls:
  • Model loading & unloading,
  • Scale (units),
  • Which scene elements to display,
  • Animation speed & pausing, and
  • Navigation to a viewpoint.

System Requirements
The current release of Conjurer is for 32-bit and 64-bit Linux and VR Juggler 2.2. A Windows version will be available sometime in Q4 2007. A stereo-capable display system, head tracking, and a wand are required for the full immersive experience. The wand interface is designed for the InterSense IS-900 wand. Other input devices may have lesser control over scene & menu interaction and navigation. A planned service release will address this issue.
