What is LS-PrePost-VR?
|
|
|
LS-PrePost-VR is a virtual
reality version of Livermore Software
Technology Corporation's LS-PrePost, an FEA pre- and post-processor
for LS-DYNA. Users of LS-PrePost-VR can view and interact with
LS-DYNA finite element analysis data in an immersive 3-D environment.
|
|
|
Features
|
|
|
1. Immersive Display Support
|
|
LS-PrePost-VR supports a wide range of 3-D stereo displays.
Examples include the CAVE™, FLEX™,
PowerWall™, ROVR™, and Immersadesk™ from
Fakespace Systems. Other
examples include systems from
Barco,
VizEverywhere, and
Visbox. The software is highly
configurable through a combination of
VR Juggler configuration
options and custom application settings, so it can support display
systems beyond what is mentioned here.
Contact us for support
information for your specific system.
|
|
|
2. Wand-Based Interaction
|
LS-PrePost-VR supports interaction via a 6 degree-of-freedom
tracked wand, such as the InterSense
IS-900 wand, A.R.T. FlyStick,
or Fakespace V-Wand. Using a wand, a user can
control:
- Model Position (translate, rotate, scale)
- Animation Playback (forward, reverse, stop, playback speed)
- Clipping of Model
- Selection of Nodes, Elements, Parts, etc.
|
|
|
|
|
3. Full User Interface
|
|
The wand is only intended for basic interaction in LS-PrePost-VR. For
functionality beyond what the wand can do, we use
LS-PrePost-Remote:
a desktop version of LS-PrePost that can act as input to
LS-PrePost-VR. LS-PrePost-Remote can run on a range of
platforms, such as a Tablet PC running Windows or a workstation running
Linux or Irix. LS-PrePost-Remote uses the exact same user
interface as standard LS-PrePost, so users familiar with the software will
immediately be able to make changes to what is displayed in VR.
|
|
|
4. Collaboration Capability
|
|
LS-PrePost-VR and LS-PrePost-Remote are now based on
Inv3rsion's SinterPoint™ architecture, which gives users the ability to
share sessions over a network. Each piece of software (Remote and VR)
is a client that can connect to a SinterPoint™ server. Through the
SinterPoint™ server, each client stays synchronized to the state of all
the other clients. The simplest example of this is using
LS-PrePost-Remote to control LS-PrePost-VR. Any number
of Remote and VR clients can connect to the same server, enabling
scenarios such as:
- multiple desktop PC users controlling a VR display,
- a single desktop PC user controlling multiple VR displays,
- multiple desktop PC users controlling each other's displays, or
- multiple VR systems controlling each other's displays
We suggest SinterPoint™-based collaboration over an intranet only. For
Internet-based collaboration, we suggest using VNC server and clients.

LS-PrePost-VR has been shown at numerous conferences, including
the 2004 LS-DYNA conference, Siggraph 2004, and SuperComputing
2004. At the 2004 LS-DYNA Conference, Todd Furlong presented a paper
entitled "Immersive Visualization and Collaboration with LS-PrePost-VR
and LS-PrePost-Remote." Email

What is the Relationship with LS-PrePost from LSTC?
|
|
|
LS-PrePost-VR and LS-PrePost-Remote are maintained
independently by Inv3rsion, LLC with no financial support from LSTC. LSTC
graciously shares their source code with Inv3rsion, LLC so that we may
provide a VR version of their software. For end-users, this relationship
means that the versions we provide will have functionality and a user
interface that matches the latest versions of LS-PrePost from LSTC.
For us, this relationship means that we have to fund LS-PrePost-VR
and LS-PrePost-Remote through our installation and support services
described below.
|
|
|
How to Get it
|
|
|
We offer different levels of installation and support
services to those seeking to obtain LS-PrePost-VR,
LS-PrePost-Remote, and the SinterPoint server.
1. Installation
Services
The LS-PrePost-VR and LS-PrePost-Remote software, like
LS-PrePost from LSTC, are free of charge for licensed LS-DYNA users.
However, our versions of the software are much more complex to set up and
configure. Therefore, we offer these installation options:
| Installation Option |
Description |
| On-Site |
We work with customers ahead of time to
pre-build VR system configuration files and determine the
SinterPoint client/server configuration. On delivery, we install the
software and tune the configuration appropriately. We also get our
customers started by importing data files and providing basic training
to end-users. This installation option is the easiest for the
customer because we do all the work. Price quotes are provided once
the scope of an installation is determined. |
| Remote |
We have added the option to remotely support
an installation for our customers. We have found that companies with
an active VR lab have a person who is capable of installing the
software with email and phone support only. Once we establish that
such a person exists at a customer site, we build configuration files
and provide support during the installation. This is a lower-cost
option than on-site installation. |
The above installation options are for customers with existing VR systems.
For customers looking to purchase a new VR system for LS-PrePost-VR,
we work with systems integrators to provide a complete solution.
2. Support
Services
Our support options are designed to keep software up-to-date and to
address problems that can arise in maintaining a complex software
system.
| Support Option |
Description |
| Single or Multi Year Contract |
This is the highest level of support we
offer, with yearly costs diminishing for multi-year commitments. At
this support level, we offer access to and notification of upgrades,
unlimited phone support, and Guaranteed Critical Issue Resolution in
2 business days. Critical Issues are defined as inoperable software
on otherwise operable hardware, or a reproducible crash specific to
LS-PrePost-VR or LS-PrePost-Remote that is not found in
the equivalent version of LSTC's LS-PrePost. This level of support is
designed for production environments.
|
| Upgrade Only |
For a smaller yearly fee, we will provide
access to and notification of updates to the software. If additional
support is required, we charge a predetermined hourly rate. |
| No Contract |
This option means there is no commitment from
either party. Support may be provided at an hourly rate,
and upgrades can be provided for a per-upgrade fee. |
